Wireless Networks: Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) Optimization

Challenge

Content Service Providers (CSPs) have deployed more and more advanced mobile networks with higher speeds available to deliver more and better content and provide higher performance to subscribers. One of the most constrained resources and a significant bottleneck point of network the Radius Access Network (RAN) is likely one of your greatest challenges to be optimised. Customer can be disappointed by broken connections and slow data transfer rates and this can result in churn and lost revenue. It’s no longer sufficient to have available network coverage. Customers nowadays expect CSP’s to deliver content with consistently high performance and lightning speed. The most effective way to manage data delivery is to optimize the TCP connection. To do so, a solution is required that sits between the Internet and the wireless network. It has to be able to manage both sides of the connection.  Both sides are very different in various characteristics in performance. 

Features of the Internet side (Gi side) of the mobile network:

  • High bandwidth
  • Minimal congestion

This requires different settings than the RAN. Typical features of the RAN:

  • Higher latency
  • Packet loss
  • Congestion

As you can imagine, connecting these two networks can cause problems because of their different features. The TCP protocol was originally not designed to handle these connections well. Therefore there have been many standards-based recommendations for improving congestion control and TCP performance. CSPs need to implement a TCP optimization solution that can negotiate the different profiles for each side of the connection to provide optimal RAN delivery performance.

Solution

F5 TCP Express is a TCP stack that is customized, provided by the BIG-IP platform. It relies on advanced TCP optimization techniques and algorithms.
